The Spirit of Tengri - 2018. Gata Band from Armenia and the French-Algerian band Speed Caravan

Russian version

The following participants have become known to perform at the 6th International Festival of Contemporary Ethnic Music The Spirit of Tengri, which will be held in Almaty on June 2-3 this year, reports. The main musical event of this summer will host the members of the Gata Band from Armenia for the first time. The Almaty audience is already familiar with the French-Algerian group Speed Caravan, whose first performance at the festival was in 2017.

The Gata Band is a unique Armenian group performing ancient music. By combining forgotten national tunes with modern music, they managed to create a new music direction. The name of the band comes from the traditional Armenian festive dish - gata (sweet pie). The range of Armenian instruments played by the band is striking: duduk, zurna, pku, kemenche, blul sring, saz, dhol, dap, parkapzuk. They also use the Persian santur, the African kalimba, the Latin American percussion instruments and the Belgian kelstone.

The founder and the leader of the band is Garegin Arakelyan. In 2006, after graduating from the Yerevan Conservatory named after Komitas, he met with deacon Andranik Manukyan - together they began to make music arrangements and record songs based on old Armenian films, mainly on the West Armenian folklore. To introduce their works live on the big stage, they decided to create a band, and Arthur Balayan and Vahan Zakaryan joined them. The band has made several recordings with Joss Stone, the famous British soul and R&B singer and Grammy award-winner. "In Armenian, gata stands for a pie baked after lavash (Armenian flat bread) in tsomini (a small bakery). So, Gata is delicious music from Armenia. It will be our first time in Kazakhstan: we are so excited and thrilled about going to Almaty. We hope, the audience enjoys our music, and we are looking forward to meeting many talented and unique musicians at the Festival. Let's try learning and bringing some good vibes to all peoples around the world, as well as bring joy with our music," the leader of Gata Band Garegin Arakelyan said.

Another participant of The Spirit of Tengri - 2018 - a year ago Speed Caravan band won the hearts of the public with incredible charisma and amazing sound of Arabic music. The multinational afro-rock band involves musicians from Algeria and France. They perform music, which you can find references to The Cure and The Chemical Brothers but with an Arabic flavor. Speed Caravan's frontman Mehdi Haddab is a master of playing the Arab lute, he calls himself "a man of two cultures". This is his third innovative musical project. He likes to combine electronics and rock music making traditional musical instruments sound modern.

"At The Spirit of Tengri 2018 I expect to spend more time on stage and express myself in terms of music to the limit. This year we want to do more improvisation and, surely, communicate more with the audience in real time. I like Kazakh culture: I am delighted how the country is proud of its musicians, its musical history, its identity. I love the way Kazakhstan is proud of dombra. I can feel your audience appreciate our music. In addition, I like that The Spirit of Tengri represents various cultures of the countries neighboring with Kazakhstan, that the Western world knows so little about. I am looking forward to meeting you at the "Festival of peace". We will give all 100% and promise to surprise the Kazakhstani audience! Thanks and see you soon on The Spirit of Tengri-2018," Mehdi Haddab said.
