The Spirit of Tengri 2018. Who is going to open the Festival?
There is just over two weeks left until the start of the main musical event of the upcoming summer - the VI International Festival of Contemporary Ethnic Music The Spirit of Tengri. The Festival starts on Saturday, 2 June, with the performance of the Uzbek band Abbos, Tengrinews.kz reports.
Abbos is named after its founder - drummer Abbos Kasimov. Known for his incredible emotionality, the musician plays the doira (a percussion musical instrument resembling tambourine) and other national instruments. It is possible to hear the sounds of zurna, karnay and nogora in the group's music.
The group was founded in 1998. For 20 years the band has toured around the USA, France, the UK, Germany, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Taiwan and many other countries all over the world. Their fans always look forward to Uzbek national melodies as well as top music hit covers played by the band with the use of traditional Uzbek musical instruments. In this style they are the pioneers.
Now Abbos is led by Abbos Kasimov's student - Ravshan Yunusov. In 2011, he opened a school with the same name where anyone can learn to play the doira. Together with the new leader the band continued its active tours: they have taken part in festivals in South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Bulgaria, Romania, England, France and the USA.
"Our major is the drums. There are similar instruments in other countries, but our vibes are special, inherent only to Uzbek music. We prefer percussions to show the spirit of our country." At The Spirit of Tengri Festival we want the Almaty audience to get to know the traditional Uzbek music, we are looking forward to see you at the Festival so we could share our music with you. "See you soon!" - Abbos leader Ravshan Yunusov said.
The privilege to open the second day of the Festival this year is given to the unique Kazakh ethno-rock band Aldaspan, who is known for playing the electro-dombra. The songs of the band include ancient Turkic fighting epics full of courage and glorifying feats of heroes. The name of the band is translated from Kazakh as "heavy saber for fighting in armor." Their music combines the audacity of the West and the freedom of the East.
The project was founded by the drummer Nurzhan Toishy in 2011. The members of the band Aldaspan are the best dombra players in the music academy: Maksat Khasanov - electro solo-dombra, Isarbek Akiyashev - electro-rhythm-dombra, Shamshiddin Omarov - electro bass dombra. The group takes part in The Spirit Of Tengri Festival every year.
"This year we have prepared very famous songs that used to be popular in Kazakhstan at the end of the 1980s: "Sugirdin termesi","Karabuyr kаskalda","Khadisha." Now they have actually become folk songs. The arrangement we have made for them has never been played by anyone else before. That will be a real ethno-rock and we hope the audience enjoys them. There will certainly be our old songs made in better quality. People like them so we will definitely play them, too. We hope the audience is astonished by the performance and the musical palette we are planning to deliver. We have included more musicians to make the sound richer - I am very excited and I hope so are you! "- the band leader Nurzhan Toisha says.
"Participating in The Spirit of Tengri is very important for us, we are ethno-rock musicians, and this is our perfect stage." We remake ethnic music and play it in a modern way to let young people understand it. The Spirit of Tengri is the leading festival in Ethno World music genre in the entire Eurasia, a landmark for artists playing ethnic music. Many musicians want to take part in this Festival, but they have to go through a very tough selection It is a great honour for us to be invited to open the second day of the Festival. It is a great event that takes place only once a year, so we will be very happy to welcome you on 2 and 3 June at the Abay square in front of the Republic Palace! " - the musician added.
