The Spirit of Tengri. The main event of the summer
23.00 See you tomorrow!
22.58 "We play our own music. We are very happy to meet open, beautiful, bright people here who dance, sing and listen with pleasure to our show. It is so cool to be here and we will definitely come again. We really like Kazakh music, and it is very similar to the one we play," the musicians said.
22.25 "It is the second year that Israeli groups participate in the Spirit of Tengri Festival with the support of the Israeli Embassy in Kazakhstan, and this year Q2A band, famous in Israel, has arrived in Almaty. In general, world music is very popular in Israel. Almaty will have a chance to hear, perhaps, one of the best and brightest Israeli bands in the genre of world music. I am inviting everybody to come to the Festival to watch this wonderful show. This year everything has been organised on a much higher level. In my opinion, this is one of the brightest and the most professional festivals, not only in Kazakhstan, but also in Central Asia. We are very pleased to work with the organization team and believe that it is very important to continue to participate in the Festival. It is a wonderful event, incredible atmosphere, fantastic audience, amazing weather. What a wonderful night! I wish everyone to enjoy the show," Michael Brodsky, Israel's Ambassador to Kazakhstan shared.
22.10 The long-awaited performance of Q2A band from Israel has started!
Quarter To Africa (Q2A) was founded as a duo in 2014. Soon, it became a versatile band, combining grooves of the electric oud, saxophone, trumpet, electric guitar, bass, drums, percussion, synthesizer and vocals (all seven members of the band call themselves a big family). Their music creates a unique collage, fusing traditional Arabic tunes with African rhythms, jazz and funk. The philosophy of the group is based on love, unity and friendship. They skillfully balance between the well-organised and improvisation, being optimistic and laid-back, combining the complex and the simple.
21.50 During his performance, Childo Thomas played a song dedicated to plov! The phrase "Tengri and plov!”, surely, made the audience very happy and they sang along with great pleasure.
According to The Spirit of Tengri organisation team, last year in Kazakhstan the musician first tried pilaf and was so delighted that he could not help making a song about the dish.
"It's been great, we're happy to be here with our band and you! Time has passed very quickly for us. Music has no boundaries, and so does this feeling inside. I'm from Africa, my groupmate is Mexican, and we make music together. We are from different countries and each of us brings the national culture and music traditions of our homelands. We bark on stage because dogs also produce sounds and it is music, too. We can imitate sounds produced by various animals and, in fact, at our national festivals loads of different sounds can be heard. We reproduce our feelings. Our songs have a base and skeleton, and everything else is pure improvisation during the show. We have not tried the national dishes yet, but we've already had plov. Therefore, during the show we kept singing "Plov, plov!" - the musician shared.
A Mozambican bass player Childo Thomas already performed at The Spirit of Tengri a year ago. Back then he joined a band of a Guinean musician Sekou Koyate. The musician liked the Kazakhstani Festival so much that he decided to bring his own jazz project Childo Tomas. The band is famous for its energy music based on a combination of Mozambican rhythms (marrabenta), jazz, Spanish and Latin American vibes.
21.28 "Every year we make surprises, this year we have prepared an exclusive lineup, the geography has expanded from Africa to our regions. This year there are a lot of newcomers such as bands from Armenia and Uzbekistan. There are a lot of bands from Africa this year. To be more precise, this time the stage of the Festival will welcome a really massive band Steppe Scape that we call the "Eurasian team". This band is unique because it includes the top musicians in the genre. These are the musicians from the Namgar band, Radik Tyulush from the Tuvan band Huun-Huur-Tu, Robert Yuldashev from the Bashkir "Kuraisy", Angela Manukyan , a famous Moscow singer. This year a musician from Kazakhstan will join this project for the first time and the band will sing a few folk Kazakh songs in a completely new arrangement, "- the head producer of The Spirit of Tengri, Zhan Kasteev shared.
21.10 Mozambican bass player Childo Thomas began his show with the words: "Rakhmet, Tengri!".
The Shono band from Buryatia already performed at The Spirit of Tengri in May 2017 and was very warm welcomed by the audience. And today the audience doesn’t want to let them go off the stage. In Shono music, the spirit of ancient nomadic peoples merges with the "heavy" rock sounding, the band stands alongside the best contemporary groups of Siberian and Mongolian ethno-rock.
"We loved absolutely everything, especially the organization, warm welcome, and the delicious food. The sound is just perfect, which is very rare. Tomorrow we are going to the mountains. We like Kazakhstan very much, and we are planning to visit Astana in June. Today there is a very cheerful and lively audience. We are getting do much energy from them and we are also sharing ours. We love it here. Today we have played new songs that will be released in our new album at the end of 2018. We take folk songs and create a new arrangement for them," the musicians said.
